Vintage Shopping Yields Hidden Treasure 💕

Vintage Shopping Yields Hidden Treasure 💕

Vintage shoppers love the idea of finding the unexpected, the unknown when they head to an open-air vintage market, venue or antique shop because they just might discover an item they fall in love with and can’t live without!

Vintage merchandise often sells at affordable prices for quality brand merchandise. In the past, the antique market was inaccessible due to high prices. Today’s market is much more accessible, especially for younger people purchasing items for their first home or for seasoned collectors looking for that special item.

Bob Ferris, an avid vintage scale collector, from Crowley, Texas recently embarked on an antique shopping trip to Austin, Texas. He planned his trip in advance and targeted 2 shops he thought were good prospects for finding scales.  While disappointed that these shops did not have what he was looking for, he decided to stop and visit a third shop, not on his list, before he left the Austin area. He was excited when he landed a unique find along with its original parts, some of which were being sold separately because the shop owners were not aware that the scale and the parts went together.

Recreate, Embrace Memories Past While Vintage Shopping

So what is Vintage? Items 20 to 100 years old originating from a previous era have that romantic aura about them because they have a past and a story behind the story. Antiques are items 100 years old or older. Owning these items can make buyers feel nostalgic as they recreate and embrace distinct memories of places and things from their past. The term “retro” means “relating to, reviving, or being the styles and especially the fashions of the past: fashionably nostalgic or old-fashioned,” according to Merriam Webster Dictionary.

Vintage decor and accessories can be surprisingly modern. A popular trend is mixing vintage with new, as well as creating a unique mix of various styles and eras. The photo of the dining room below is my own dining room, unintentionally put together without any specific planning after Randy and I moved into our new home in Crowley, Texas in May of 2019. The items below were items Randy had in his own collection. It was amazingly fun to decorate our retro dining area with this Coca Cola collection. As you can see, the grandkids love the Coca-Cola booth. We just need one of those table-top junk boxes to put at the end of it!

Antique, Vintage and Retro items also make for a great way to create an individual look with the new upcycling, recycling, repurposing, refurbishing and repainting quality antique furniture trends. Steam Punk, Architectural Salvage and Farmhouse have also become popular for their individuality.

Vintage Shopping Offers Personalized Look

There are lots of reasons that vintage has become popular. One of them is that shoppers believe that mainstream items have become less unique and that mass-produced furniture and accessories are routine copy-cat items that anyone can buy.

There is a quality to vintage that makes it transcend newer items because they are chosen for uniqueness, quality, and design value.

Designers are integrating old looks that were once popular into modern décor for a unique, eclectic mix. A popular trend is “if you love it and it speaks to you, it works! Don’t stress over what somebody else thinks.

It’s never been so easy to look modern and current while reusing the old.

Vintage Shopping Offers Unchanging styles

There are always going to be people who prefer individual and interesting pieces and buy them as investments or one-offs. Shoppers are waking up to the fact that vintage can be adaptable to the latest trends, and that they are also timeless classics that can become a staple of their lifestyle. They will always be in style in their own way. You can pick up the latest trend and have something that’s only good for a few weeks, or you can buy something vintage you can enjoy for years.

Originality and Style Comes With Vintage Shopping

One of the most important aspects of a stylish home is being original. It tells a lot about a person and his or her personality. Vintage upcycling, re-purposing, repainting, industrial and architectural creations allow people to express themselves while creating their own original lifestyle, to fit in, yet stand out. It’s hard to do that, but anything is possible with creativity and skills to see the vision and bring it to reality.

Heart and Story: Part of Vintage Shopping

Vintage has a heart to it – there’s a story behind the story.  There’s much more to vintage than just being old and used. There is a history and art to vintage because these items are filled with the stories and memories of the people that came before us and owned them. Owning vintage keeps those people and their history and artistry alive.

When it’s all said done, owning vintage means being packaged in a unique way.

It’s matchless, it’s distinct, it’s rare and many times, it’s just plain extraordinary.

What about you?

Don’t forget to stop at Beverly Riley’s Rusty Relics booth –  the name says it all – you will see a rusty tinged 1934 Ford fender positioned on a barge board to create a unique, one-of-a-kind table. This was a 1800s barge board that once floated the Mississippi river – it started at the top of the river, and floated down with the goods on it. Beverly said the boards are emerging again and being sold at high prices. “If you looked on the wood from the bottom side you would see all kinds of little bug tunnels – these boards have a lot of character.”

30 Plus Mile Flea Market Dubbed Antique Alley Texas

30 Plus Mile Flea Market Dubbed Antique Alley Texas

The 30 plus mile flea market, now called the Antique Alley Texas, began as a weekend sidewalk sale 19 years ago soon blossomed into a windfall sales event – an event that benefited Grandview, Texas as well as the small surrounding towns – the restaurants had to hire extra help and stay open extra long hours, the town ATMs ran out of money and Grandview’s gas stations ran out of gas.

How 30 Plus Mile Flea Market, known as Antique Alley Texas Began

Lisa Hill and Nita Redmon bought Pop & Grans located at 300 E. Criner in downtown Grandview, Texas in 1999. As the days ticked by, the would ask themselves, “What can we do to boost the economy of this sleepy little town?”

The people and merchants in a small town are often like family, sharing the good days and shouldering the bad days of small town economics together. Lisa and Nita struck up a conversation with neighbor merchants,  Bob and Patricia Dawkins, who owned the 10,000 square foot antique mall across the street at that time. They reflected and brainstormed – what could they do to boost the economy of Grandview? They decided to have a weekend sidewalk sale. Bob & Patricia had 53 vendors who set up booths on the north sidewalk of Crier street and Nita and Lisa set up booths on the south sidewalk of Crier street.

Sidewalk Sale Becomes a Hit, Evolves Into 30 Plus Mile Flea Market

The vendors set up and the people came out in droves to buy their merchandise. The sidewalk sale was a hit, the people loved it and everyone began asking when they were going to do it again.

After that first sidewalk sale in 1999, a couple of farms on Highway 4 said they were going to have yard sales at the same time as the sidewalk sale, then other area residents decided to join in and benefit from the sale’s popularity. The event soon evolved into a 30 plus mile flea market.

Nita and Lisa decided to advertise the sale to be held  twice a year in April and September.

Cleburne, Maypearl, Alvarado, Venus and Waxahachie Join Festivities

Cleburne, Maypearl, Alvarado, then Venus and now Waxahachie joined in the festivities that have now become a 30 plus mile flea market – each town works their own festival and schedules times for their own individual entertainment venues or car shows. Waxahachie joined in 2018. Waxahachie has 15 antiques shops and is a nice bonus to the Antique Alley Texas organization.

“We drew up a legal charter and our goal was to benefit every town possible – in these little towns we struggle to survive,” Nita said.

The Antique Alley Texas Association keeps the whole 30 plus miles flea market machine working. This organization is made up of independent business people, not only trying to boost their own business, but boost the economy of the entire community.

Antique Alley Texas Awarded Number 1 Tourism Draw for Johnson County

While each town independently operates their own festival, which now make up a 30 plus mile flea market, all of the towns advertise together, and they all work together, each one with the goal of boosting their town’s economy.

The Johnson County Commissioners Court, realizing that Antique Alley Texas had become a tourism draw, awarded Antique Alley Texas the No. 1 tourism event in Johnson County as well as the number one economic boost in Johnson County.

Vendors traveling to and from the Texas Antiques Week Fair in Round Top and Warrenton, Texas have traditionally shopped this 30 mile plus flea market to buy merchandise to resell at the Texas Antiques Week Fair.

This 30 plus mile flea market, known as Antique Alley Texas, is growing and evolving and it’s still a good festival, Nita said.

Antique Alley Texas: A Junker’s Dream

Antique Alley Texas: A Junker’s Dream

What started as a sidewalk sale in downtown Grandview and a couple of yard sales toward Cleburne in 1999 has turned into a 30+ mile long biannual event. Twice yearly on the 3rd full weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) of April and September Antique Alley Texas presents miles of treasure hunting. Each year the show changes and evolves. Scattered along  the current “treasure trail” in the towns of Grandview, Cleburne, Keene, Alvarado, Venus, Maypearl, downtown Waxahachie and along the way you will find folks offering their “goodies”. Most businesses in the participating downtown’s (particularly Grandview and Cleburne)  offer “Antique Alley” sales with big discounts. Well worth stopping in to investigate.

This is not an antique show but rather a “pot luck” hunt where antiques can be found hiding on a table in a yard sale. Some show locations will have antiques, collectibles, western items, quilts and no telling what else. Hunting abounds along the shopping trail. Pick up a shopping trail “Official Map” at Pop & Gran’s Antiques 300 E. Criner Street downtown Grandview. This map includes the major shopping stops but not all locations are listed.
